Best Buddies is grounded in the belief that friendship is important to the development of all individuals and that for individuals who have an intellectual disability, friendship is a medium through which they can integrate more fully into their communities. Best Buddies gives people the chance to have experiences which most people take for granted - going for coffee, out to a movie, talking on the phone, or simply enjoying the company of a good friend. At the Windsor Best Buddies chapter, students from the University of Windsor and St. Clair College are matched with individuals who have an intellectual disability and who share similar interests. It is managed by a student volunteer, with support from Community Living Windsor. The "Buddy Pairs" call each other weekly and get together approximately twice a month. They also organize fundraisers to cover the costs of their group activities. The Windsor chapter has a lot of fun and in previous years, have raised enough funds to take special trips to Toronto and Florida! If you are a student at the University of Windsor or St. Clair College and are interested in giving of your time to this exciting group, we would love to hear from you.
