New Canada Disability Benefit

Beginning in July 2025, we expect to see a new Canada Disability Benefit be available to most of the people we support.  As part of the legislation, people are NOT automatically enrolled, and an application process will need to occur.  The application is expected to open in early summer 2025.

The benefit to people supported will be up to $200/month or $2,400/year.  There are factors that could reduce these amounts (more information is available in the link below).

Summarized eligibility for the benefit is expected to be:

  • Age 18-64

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, some others

  • Valid Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate

  • Up-to-date on their tax filings

ACTION Suggested:

People, families, and supporters are encouraged to review whether the person supported has a Disability Tax Credit certificate already in place. Some people may not have this because the application can be onerous and might have not previously been necessary, depending on the person's tax status. Verifying this now will mean that the application process will be simplified in the future.  You may also wish to ensure that a copy of the certificate is available for when the application portal opens. Details on the process to obtain a DTC can be found by clicking here.
